What Are Peptides? Amino Acids, Bonds, and Research Terms

Peptides are chains of amino-acid residues connected by peptide bonds. This guide explains the vocabulary needed to read a material record or research paper without turning a chemical description into a health claim.

The Short Answer

Amino acids can join through covalent links called peptide bonds. The resulting chain may be described as a peptide, oligopeptide, or polypeptide depending on the source and context. Length labels are useful shorthand, but they do not establish a chain's identity, purity, structure, biological activity, safety, or approved use.

Order matters

Chains containing similar residues can be different materials when those residues appear in a different order.

Names need context

A short name, abbreviation, blend name, salt form, or catalog label should be matched to the supplied identity and documentation.

Structure is not a claim

A chemical description does not by itself demonstrate an outcome in cells, animals, humans, or any other research model.

Records have boundaries

A product record can identify what is offered and which documentation is available; it cannot replace study evidence or regulatory review.

  • What exact material name, sequence, form, and size are stated?
  • Does the record identify a lot, batch, or other traceable reference?
  • Which identity, purity, or analytical methods are actually reported?
  • Is a statement describing chemistry, a study observation, or a regulated use?
  • Can each important statement be traced to a supplied record or primary source?
